Honors English 3
Honors English III is a course at the junior level designed to cover all areas of communication arts. Emphasis is placed upon interpreting American literature through both oral discussions and written compositions, while at the same time covering grammar usage. Included are vocabulary, speeches, test-taking skills, and a variety of American literature, along with independent reading. This course will emphasize the use of critical thinking skills and will include many enrichment activities. The research process is also covered.

Civil War pieces – both fiction and nonfiction, selected works from Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Kate Chopin, and Jack London
Early Twentieth Century (1914-1946)
Selected works from T.S. Elliot, Ezra Pound, John Steinbeck, E.E. Cummings, Ernest Hemingway, Carl Sandburg, James Thurber, and Langston Hughes
Mid-Twentieth Century to Present
Novels and plays included: The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, The Last of the Mohicans, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Great Gatsby, The Glass Menagerie, and A Farewell to Arms
Writing and grammar will be studied in conjunction with literature. The types of writing that students will be expected to produce are narratives, descriptive essays, persuasive essays, reflective essays, letters, and literary analysis. In addition, a research paper is included in this course.
